Bored internet dating

I don’t believe hookup culture has infected our brains and turned us into soulless sex-hungry swipe monsters. It doesn’t do to pretend that dating in the app era hasn’t changed. Tinder arrived in 2012, and nipping at its heels came other imitators and twists on the format, like Hinge (connects you with friends of friends), Bumble (women have to message first), and others.Older online dating sites like OKCupid now have apps as well.

My app hiatus was a much-needed break, but not everything about it was wonderful.

The time away reminded me how hard it is to find dates without using the Internet.

Last year I pegged "Joe Generic" as one of the worst types of online daters, but apparently, he continues to keep cloning himself all over the Internet. Seriously, if you've read one dude's online dating profile, you've probably read the next 20.

And here are the worst offenders—the phrases that I've read so many times, I can practically smell them coming when I check out a new guy's profile."The most private thing I'm willing to admit is…I'm on an online dating site lol." Not only is this the most boring, commonly used answer to this question, it also does a sly double duty as an insult.

With a string of bad dates behind you and no dates to speak of in the immediate future, one starts to wonder: could it be me? Many factors play a part in finding the love of your life. Hopefully the answer to those questions is a whole-hearted yes. If you are at a loss for an answer, either you haven’t been on a date for a while or you monopolized the conversation.

Being in the right frame of mind, good timing and a little lady luck are just a few. But if you are boring others with yawn-worthy conversations, turning them off with negativity or avoiding people altogether, you are making your search to find “the one” that much more difficult. Here are some key indicators to help you determine whether you are dating to your potential or sabotaging your chances at a connection. This is a common problem for many people, and in most cases it’s unintentional.

That said, you may want to consider exactly what you are bringing to the table when you go out with someone. It’s All About Me First, reflect upon your last date. Some just can’t stand the sound of silence, and to fill it they’ll talk about anything. In other words, are you avoiding the masses and refusing to go out?

Since we feel comfortable talking about what we know, the conversation inevitably turns to ourselves. If the answer to these questions is mostly yes, you are running the risk of being too withdrawn.

I wanted to take advantage of cool connections I was making in real life as I was making them, rather than hoping to run into the person again virtually.
